One Charger for Everything: USB Power Delivery Explained

If your desk or nightstand looks like a spaghetti factory of charging blocks and cables, you’re in good company. Most of us have accumulated a small army of chargers over the years — one for the phone, one for the tablet, a bulky brick for the laptop — and none of them seem to be in the right place when you actually need them. The good news is there’s a much better way, and it starts with understanding a standard called USB Power Delivery.

What Is USB Power Delivery (USB PD)?

USB Power Delivery is the smart charging standard that’s quietly changing everything about how we power our devices. Unlike older USB-A ports that maxed out around 7.5 watts, USB PD allows a charger and your device to have a brief “conversation” at the start of each charging session. They agree on the right voltage and amperage — anywhere from 5 volts up to 20 volts — and the charger delivers exactly what that device needs, safely and quickly.

The result? Your phone, tablet, laptop, smartwatch, and wireless earbuds can all charge from a single modern charger. No more guessing which brick goes with which device. No more slow overnight charges because you grabbed the wrong adapter. And no more worrying about whether a charger might damage a device, because USB PD has that safety conversation built right in.

It’s worth knowing there are a few other standards in the mix too. Quick Charge (QC), developed by Qualcomm, delivers up to 18 watts over USB-A and works great with a wide range of Android devices. And Programmable Power Supply (PPS) takes USB PD even further, adjusting voltage and amperage in tiny increments for a perfectly tuned charge every time.

Finding the Best Charging Station: The Sabrent Voltic 252W

Once you understand USB PD, it’s easy to see why a quality multi-port charging station makes so much sense. The Sabrent Voltic 252W is a great example of what the best charging station looks like for a home or home office setup.

It offers eight ports total — four USB-C and four USB-A — with a combined output of 252 watts. Each USB-C port can deliver up to 100 watts on its own, enough to charge a laptop at full speed. The USB-A ports support Quick Charge at up to 18 watts each, so your older devices are well looked after too. A handy LCD screen shows you exactly what each port is doing in real time, including voltage, amperage, and wattage — genuinely useful if you ever suspect a device has a charging issue.

The unit is UL-certified for electrical safety, compact enough for a desktop or travel bag, and even includes a wall-mount option to keep things tidy. In real-world use, it handles a phone, tablet, laptop, action camera, and multiple LED lights simultaneously — all without any heat, noise, or fuss.

One practical tip: pair any high-power charging station with quality cables. Look for USB-C cables rated for 100W and USB-A cables rated for at least 18W. Retire the mystery cables in your drawer — they’re often the weak link in a fast-charging setup.

USB Power Delivery isn’t just a tech buzzword. It’s a genuinely practical standard that simplifies your charging life, reduces clutter, and gives you real peace of mind. The right charging station, paired with good cables, can serve your entire household from a single spot on your desk.

A Math-Based Approach To Getting the Best Value for Your Parts-Buying Dollar

Finding the right balance between cost and power is the “holy grail” of PC building. With prices fluctuating and new generations of hardware launching constantly, many beginners fall into the trap of buying the most advertised parts rather than the most efficient ones. If you want to maximize your PC price to performance, you need a repeatable system.

The Data-Driven Approach

The first step is moving away from brand loyalty and toward raw data. Using tools like Passmark, you can find a component’s “Score.” By dividing this score by your local market price, you create a “Value Metric.” This allows you to compare a three-year-old flagship GPU against a brand-new entry-level card objectively.

Verify with Real-World Performance

Synthetic scores are great, but they don’t play games—you do. Once you’ve narrowed down your choices, head to YouTube. Search for the specific CPU and GPU combination you are considering. Look for “1% Lows” to ensure a smooth experience, as a high average FPS can often hide annoying stutters.

Avoiding the Bottleneck

Finally, ensure your parts are a “team.” A high-end GPU paired with a budget CPU may result in a bottleneck, meaning you’ve wasted money on power you can’t actually use. Use a bottleneck calculator to ensure your components are within a 10% performance margin of each other.

By following this 4-step tektoc method, you aren’t just building a computer; you’re making a smart financial investment in your gaming future.

Check out the video above for a step-by-step guide to maximizing your PC’s price-to-performance ratio!

The Longevity of AMD’s AM4 Platform Makes It Ideal For a Budget PC Build

PC building has gotten expensive again, and the frustrating part is that it’s not always the “fun” components causing the problem. Lately, two of the biggest budget killers have been the parts every computer needs: RAM and SSD storage. Even if you’re not building a gaming PC, those rising prices can turn a simple office setup into an overpriced project.

In this video, I break down a smarter approach: build only what you need for your use case and reuse parts that still work perfectly well. For many people, an office PC doesn’t need extreme specs — it just needs to be fast, quiet, reliable, and affordable.

This build is for a real-world home office situation: web browsing, email, spreadsheets, Zoom calls, and everyday productivity. Instead of buying everything new, I’m reusing a 512GB NVMe SSD and DDR4 RAM from an older Dell system. Reusing storage and memory can save a surprising amount of money, especially when pricing is inflated.

For the new components, I’m focusing on value and simplicity. The Ryzen 5 3400G is a great choice because it includes integrated graphics, which means there’s no need to buy a dedicated GPU. Pairing it with an ASRock A520 mini-ITX motherboard keeps the build compact and modern without overspending on features that won’t matter for office work.

This video is Part 1 of a two-part series. Here, I explain the strategy and the parts choices. In Part 2, I’ll assemble everything inside the InWin mini-ITX case and show the finished system running.

If you’re trying to build a cheap, practical PC in today’s market, this is one of the best ways to do it without sacrificing the experience.

Open-Source vs Subscription Software: Who Really Wins? https://tektoc.net/2026/02/09/open-source-vs-subscription-software-who-really-wins/ https://tektoc.net/2026/02/09/open-source-vs-subscription-software-who-really-wins/#respond Mon, 09 Feb 2026 23:26:58 +0000 https://tektoc.net/?p=4806 Is subscription software really better than open-source? This video explains the real trade-offs between renting software and owning your tools, covering cost, control, long-term access, and why subscriptions became the default model.

The post Open-Source vs Subscription Software: Who Really Wins? appeared first on tektoc.

]]>

Which Is Better: Rent, or Own?

Over the last decade, the way we use software has fundamentally changed. What used to be a one-time purchase is now almost always a recurring subscription. From creative tools to office software, users increasingly rent access instead of owning a product outright.

This shift raises an important question: is subscription software actually better, or does open-source software offer advantages that many users overlook?

Subscription software appeals to companies because it provides predictable revenue and allows continuous updates. For users, subscriptions can offer convenience, cloud features, and seamless collaboration—especially for services that rely on online infrastructure. In many business environments, subscriptions genuinely make sense.

However, subscriptions come with trade-offs. Stop paying, and access disappears. Prices can increase without warning, features can be removed, and long-term access to your own files may depend on an active account. Over time, these costs and restrictions add up.

Open-source software works differently. Its source code is publicly available, meaning the software isn’t tied to the survival or decisions of a single company. Many open-source tools are free to use, don’t require ongoing payments, and allow users to retain full control over their data and workflows.

Contrary to common myths, modern open-source software is often powerful, polished, and widely used. Tools like Blender, Linux, OBS, and LibreOffice prove that open development can compete with—and sometimes outperform—paid alternatives.

Ultimately, the choice between open-source and subscription software isn’t about which is “better,” but about understanding incentives. Subscription software optimizes for convenience and recurring revenue, while open-source prioritizes resilience, transparency, and user control.

Knowing the difference helps you choose tools that truly serve your needs—today and in the long term.

Watch the video above for an in-depth look at both of these options, and the circumstances under which they offer the best value.

You Can Save HUGE Money Buying Used – If You Know How to Go About It

Buying a new graphics card in today’s market can be painfully expensive, even for entry-level models. That’s why more and more PC builders and gamers are turning to the used market, especially eBay, to score great deals on GPUs. But while the savings can be substantial, so are the risks—unless you know what to look for.

In this guide, we’ll walk through 7 essential steps you must take when buying a used GPU on eBay to protect yourself from bad sellers, faulty hardware, and hidden problems.

The process starts before you ever click “Buy.” Carefully scrutinize the listing by checking the seller’s reputation, reading recent reviews, and verifying the return policy. Pay close attention to the photos—make sure they’re not stock images, and carefully examine details like the I/O ports, warranty seals, fans, and power connectors. If the card is a higher-end model, it’s worth asking if it’s ever been used for crypto mining, since that can affect longevity.

Next, confirm that your power supply can handle the GPU you’re purchasing. Once the card arrives, perform a visual inspection for damage or heavy wear, clean it thoroughly, and install it carefully. After installing the latest drivers, verify the card’s authenticity with GPU-Z and run a stress test with FurMark to ensure stable performance and cooling.

By following these 7 steps—scrutinizing the listing, checking details and photos, verifying power requirements, inspecting upon arrival, cleaning, installing properly, and testing—you can dramatically reduce your risk and buy a used GPU with confidence.

While there will always be some level of risk when buying used hardware, being thorough and methodical gives you the best chance of finding a great deal without getting burned. Whether you’re upgrading your current rig or building a new budget PC, these tips will help you shop smart and stretch your dollar further.

Watch the video above to see how I followed these steps when purchasing my own used GPU on eBay!

If you’ve been hanging on to an older AM4 motherboard like so many of us have, you’re going to love what AMD just did. In late June 2025 they quietly dropped the Ryzen 5 5500X3D – a brand-new CPU that brings 3D V-Cache gaming magic to a platform that’s almost nine years old. It feels like AMD is saying, “We’ve got your back.”

What Makes the Ryzen 5 5500X3D Special?

This six-core, twelve-thread Zen 3 chip carries the same 96 MB of L3 cache that makes other X3D processors so smooth in games. It runs at a comfortable 105 W TDP, so it drops right into most existing AM4 boards with a quick BIOS update. Clock speeds are a touch lower than the earlier 5600X3D, but the price lands around $150–$200 US, making it one of the most affordable ways to add serious gaming performance without buying a whole new system.

Why Release a New AMD Ryzen on Old AM4 Hardware?

At first it sounds crazy – why support a platform everyone was supposed to abandon? The answer is simple and practical. In places like Latin America, AM5 builds still cost a lot more because of local pricing. The Ryzen 5 5500X3D gives those folks a real upgrade path that actually fits their wallets. Even here at home, thousands of us still run solid AM4 systems with fast DDR4 memory. AMD looked at real-world needs instead of chasing the “newest is always best” crowd, and that decision just makes good sense.

Who Should Grab This AMD Ryzen CPU?

If you game at 1080p or 1440p and want buttery frame times without spending big, the Ryzen 5 5500X3D is worth a serious look. It’s perfect for anyone who already owns a B450, B550 or X570 board and doesn’t want to replace the motherboard, RAM and CPU all at once. The extra cache really shines in modern titles, giving you that extra smoothness you notice every time you play.

Best of all, this move shows AMD’s commitment to longevity and cutting down on e-waste. Instead of forcing everyone onto a new platform, they’re keeping millions of perfectly good PCs useful for years longer. That’s the kind of thinking that keeps your retirement savings safe and your tech upgrades simple.

The bad news? This fantastic, budget-friendly AMD Ryzen CPU is only available in Latin America!

If you’re wondering whether the Ryzen 5 5500X3D makes sense for your setup, pop over to the video and I’ll walk you through everything step by step. You’ll see exactly why this little CPU is proof that AMD still listens to regular users like us.

I’m a huge fan of purchasing refurbished PCs for productivity purposes (as opposed to more computing-intensive tasks like gaming and content creation). But I hear from a lot of folks that they are a bit nervous going this route given their uncertainty on what they will actually receive for their hard-earned money.

In this video, I discuss the use case for this HP ProDesk Mini PC, unbox what I received from Amazon, and go through some of the steps I took to make sure I got a fair deal, and to get the PC up to snuff for the job it’s been purchased to do.

UPDATE: after filming, I had a chance to do a little more investigation into the wi-fi issue. It turned out the both the wi-fi and Bluetooth antennas were in place, and the wires were run in the case, but the M.2 wi-fi/Bluetooth adapter was indeed missing. I tested the USB dongle that was included with the PC and it works quite well. In the end, I just removed the antennas and wiring to clean up the case a bit.

The post ‘Open Box’ Versus Just Plain ‘Used’ – My Best Buy Marketplace Experience appeared first on tektoc.

]]>
One of my biggest pet peeves is how, over time, the meaning of words tends to get watered down by people who have something to gain by doing so. Right now, I’m noticing that retailers who sell discounted products seem to be interchangeably using the words ‘Open Box’, ‘Refurbished’ and just plain ‘Used’.

Logically, these words don’t all mean the same thing, and consumers have a right to have clarity around what they are actually buying. A ‘used’ item is just that: previously owned by someone, used and then resold. ‘Refurbished’ is similar: a used item that has gone thru some amount of cleaning/repair/reconfiguring to make it more attractive for resale. I think we all understand those terms pretty well.

Where things seem to go off the rails on many retail sites (eBay, Amazon, Best Buy Marketplace) is with the term ‘Open Box’. Here’s a hint: ‘Open Box’ is not the same as ‘Used’ or ‘Refurbished’! I find it genuinely shocking that so many private sellers and retailers are flogging old, worn items as ‘Open Box’.

What Really Is – Or Should Be – ‘Open Box’?

For clarity, here’s what I think is a reasonable definition of what ‘Open Box’ should and does mean, from the website dealnews.com:

“When you see an item marked as “open-box,” it means just that: the packaging has been opened. The product has likely been returned for some reason, but not necessarily because it’s damaged. An open-box product could be something a shopper changed their mind about. The buyer may have returned it because they decided they didn’t like the color, or for an equally trivial reason……Open-box products can also be floor models that the store has used to show the item off to customers.”

So, for clarity, an ‘Open Box’ item should be one that was either a store sample, or returned within the original retailers return period (usually 10-30 days). It should be:

  • in the original retail packaging,
  • largely indistinguishable from new condition,
  • and have all of the original parts and accessories.

It should NOT be:

  • an item that is several years old,
  • showing signs of significant wear,
  • lacking the original packaging and accessories.

Protecting Yourself as a Smart Buyer

It’s so important when shopping for ‘refurbished’ and ‘open box’ items that you understand exactly what it is you’re getting, and particularly what the return and warranty policies are. This applies to all retailers and websites that offer these products since they all seem to be playing fast-and-loose with the terminology.

That said, some retailers have some superior offerings that help the consumer have confidence in their purchase. For instance, Best Buy’s ‘Geek Squad Certified’ open-box items have a solid return policy, are guaranteed to be functionally and cosmetically flawless, and have a minimum one-year warranty from either the original manufacturer or Best Buy. This gives a buyer confidence that they really are purchasing a near-new open-box product. Of course, it also means that you may be paying more than you would for another retailer’s similar ‘open-box’ item that doesn’t come with such guarantees.

More information on the ‘Geek Squad Certified Open Box’ program (Canada version) can be found here.

My Experience Purchasing an ‘Open Box’ Item From Best Buy Marketplace

Unlike in the US, Best Buy Canada has a ‘marketplace’ where third-party sellers can sell their products on the Best Buy website, with Best Buy only backing the return policies and processing the orders. It works a lot like Amazon.

In the video below, I buy a supposedly ‘open box’ laptop from a marketplace seller and show you what I got for the money I spent. I also discuss in greater detail things to look out for when making these types of purchases. Go ahead and check it out!

  • First, I write down the features that I need for my use-case (in studio or in the field, photography first or video first, etc.),
  • Second, I decide what my maximum price range is and generate a list of cameras in the price range that have the features I need,
  • Third, I get hands-on to determine which camera is most comfortable for me,
  • Lastly, I take the ones I’m happiest with at this point, and purchase the one that has the best specifications for the price.

Making sure I don’t neglect that third point is the one that has probably saved me from regret the most. While it’s tempting to just look at features and specifications, find the best value, then make an online purchase…don’t do that! Here’s why:

If a camera isn’t comfortable in your hands, you aren’t going to be using it. Trust me on this. Make sure you are going to enjoy carrying your new purchase. Is the size and weight right? Do the controls and menus make sense to you? Are you confident that you’ll look forward to having it on you?

The reality is, I’d rather have a camera that is missing a feature or two, than one I don’t like carrying. If I don’t like carrying my digital camera, it’s going to stay at home, or in my hotel room, and I’m going to fall back on using my cellphone. That’s a decision I know I’l regret later when I get home and start reviewing my photos and video.

How To Try Before You Buy

Of course, trying out a new digital camera before buying can be a bit of a challenge. Here are some options:

  • Shop at a reputable camera store that will allow you to test out a camera in-store,
  • Try renting the models you are most interested in before buying,
  • Purchase online from a retailer with flexible return policies (such as Amazon), then try out your digital camera thoroughly before the return window expires,
  • Lastly, consider buying used. That way, if your purchase is less than ideal, at least you may be able to get most or all of your money back by reselling the item.
