DJI Osmo Pocket 3 Review: Still the Best Budget Vlogging Camera Right Now

If you’ve been shopping for a vlogging camera lately, chances are the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 has crossed your radar. Even with newer models on the market, this little pocket-sized camera continues to be one of the smartest buys for anyone who wants professional-looking video without professional-level hassle. Here’s why it’s still worth your attention — and why the timing on this one might matter more than usual.

What Makes the Osmo Pocket 3 Stand Out

The heart of this camera is its 1-inch sensor, which is large for something this small. That sensor size is the main reason the footage looks as good as it does: rich detail, strong dynamic range, and noticeably better performance in dim rooms or evening light than you’d expect from a camera you can slip into a jacket pocket.

Paired with that sensor is a three-axis mechanical gimbal, and this is where the Pocket 3 really separates itself from phone cameras or action cams that rely on digital stabilization. A mechanical gimbal physically counteracts your movement in real time, so your footage stays smooth whether you’re walking, turning, or handing the camera to someone else entirely. Digital stabilization can crop and smear footage to fake that smoothness; a mechanical gimbal doesn’t have to fake anything.

One of the most useful features for solo creators is Follow Mode. Turn it on, and the camera tracks your face and keeps you framed as you move around — no assistant, no tripod dance, no constantly repositioning. It’s about as close as you’ll get to having your own cameraman for the price of a single piece of gear.

Specs That Matter for Everyday Vloggers

On the numbers side, the Pocket 3 shoots 4K video at up to 120 frames per second, which gives you plenty of room for smooth slow-motion clips without needing a separate camera. Combine that with reliable face tracking and a form factor that genuinely fits in your pocket, and you’ve got a setup that’s hard to beat if you want prosumer-quality footage without prosumer-sized gear or a prosumer-sized price tag.

Compared to newer flagship cameras — including DJI’s own more recent releases — the Pocket 3 remains the sweet spot for anyone who wants strong video quality on a realistic budget rather than chasing the newest spec sheet. With the Pocket 4 and Pocket 4P now available, pricing on the Pocket 3 is better than ever.

If there is any downside to the Pocket 3, it’s that the gimbal head does make it a little more fragile than some other cameras. You’ll want to keep it in its protective case when not in use, and don’t subject it to drops or other abuse. That said, immediately after getting mine I did drop it, straight on its head, from about 4 feet on to a carpeted floor – with no ill effects.

A Timing Note Worth Knowing

Here’s the part that makes this purchase a little more urgent than a typical gear recommendation: in the United States, the FCC has already banned sales of newer DJI products, including the Osmo Pocket 4 and Pocket 4P. There’s talk that older models, potentially including the Pocket 3, could eventually be added to that list as well.

Nothing is confirmed yet, and this is very much a developing situation rather than a settled one. But if you’ve been on the fence about picking up an Osmo Pocket 3, it’s worth factoring that uncertainty into your timeline rather than assuming it’ll always be readily available.

Bottom Line

For creators who want dependable, high-quality vlogging footage without lugging around a full camera rig, the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 remains one of the smartest picks on the market. Between the large sensor, mechanical gimbal, Follow Mode, and 4K 120fps capability, it checks nearly every box a vlogger actually needs — and given the current regulatory uncertainty around DJI products in the US, it may be worth deciding sooner rather than later if it’s on your list.

I absolutely adore my Pocket 3. If I’m shooting outside of the studio, it’s the first camera I grab. The video quality is phenomenal, it links straight up to my DJI Mic Mini wireless lavalier mic and it requires zero setup in the field. Just turn it on and hit ‘record’.
